The pretty village of Angles sur l’Angin is just 2km from La Métairie d’Auge. The village dates back to medieval times and has its own ruined château perched high on a cliff overlooking the river Anglin. The château is open to the public and provides spectacular views of the village and the beautiful Anglin valley.
The village is famous for producing a particular type of lace- ‘jours d’angle’ a craft which is continued today. A recently built visitor interpretation centre for the famous “roc au sorcieres” enables visitors to discover the amazing sculpted frieze from the Magdalanian era. From the book fair to a not-to-be-missed firework displays- the village holds a series of events for visitors throughout the year.
Canoeing on the local rivers is great fun. Choose from hiring by the hour on the river Gartempe at La Bussiere (10km) or half/ full day hire on the rivers Gartempe or Anglin.
The beautiful spa town of La Roche Posay is just 8km away. This town is famous for its healing spa waters which are reputed to have a curative effect on many skin conditions. Beauty and relaxation treatments are also available and can be taken singly or as part of an individual programme. The town boasts an 18-hole golf course, which is open to the public and offers club hire. La Roche also has a casino which is open every day of the year. For those who wish to dine out the town has a wide range of restaurants and bars. The weekly markets provide the opportunity to sample the wide variety of local produce including wines, cheeses, sausage and bread.
Poitiers– (52km)a medieval city situated on a hill and dominated by the church of Notre Dame. This city is steeped in history and has three different routes of discovery. The city is also excellent for shopping and dining out.
La Métairie d’Auge is situated on the edge of the Brenne National Park . A conservation area teeming with wildlife (from wild boar to rare fresh water turtles). The many lakes and marshes provide ideal locations for bird and nature watching. The park has several visitor centres that provide information about trails, guided walks and much more. Cycle and canoe hire are available in the Brenne.
There’s lots to do at the medieval town of Chauvigny (27km). It has a busy and lively weekly market. The Velo-rail offers an exciting way to experience the countryside and is great fun for all the family. Les Geants du Ciel is a spectacular collection of birds of prey, housed in the château, where flying displays are held daily. There are lots of good restaurants in the medieval town and in the lower town.
Futuroscope near Poitiers (50km) is a theme park dedicated to moving images.The fantastic futuristic buildings each house a different attraction. The park also has parks and playgrounds. Each evening in the summer (and at weekends in the winter) there is a magnificent firework and laser display.
Less than an hour and a half south of the river Loire, we are ideally situated for visits to the many châteaux of the Loire– Loches, Azay-le-Rideau, Chenonceau and Villandry being the closest.
